Frequently Asked Questions

Nothing creates the atmosphere at your wedding ceremony, reception, party or gala event more powerfully than live music. Below are frequently asked questions we have heard when given the task of planning live music for an event.

Q:  Is Ensemble Elan an agency?
A: No. Ensemble Elan is a small business, founded and directed solely by cellist Julie Zupan. The personal service you receive will always be directly from Julie.  The musicians of Ensemble Elan are an elite group of professional musicians who consistently perform and record together.

Q:  How do I know what size ensemble or which instruments are appropriate for my event?
A: The music professionals of Ensemble Elan have the experience to know what works best for your venue, the size of your guest list and the emotions surrounding your event.

Q:  Do I need to select each piece played during my event?
A: You may select each piece if you prefer or you may choose several favorite selections. If choosing a few favorites, Julie will then fill in with additional repertoire that complements your preferred choices.

Q:  Does Ensemble Elan play just the Wedding Ceremony or do you play the Cocktail hour, during Dinner and for Dancing as well?

A: Ensemble Elan can do one, either or provide music for your entire event. Often, after performing ceremony music, we remain and play for the cocktail hour, staying for dinner and even into an evening of dancing, all the while, creating a lovely transition from a very reverent moment in your life to an evening of celebration.

Q:  Does Ensemble Elan travel outside the Washington, DC area?
A: Yes we do! Ensemble Elan travels as far South as Williamsburg and Richmond, as far North as Philadelphia and as far West as the Shenandoah Valley and beyond. A nominal fee may be charged for travel time required. Arrangements can also be made for Ensemble Elan to perform at your event should it be outside our customary travel region.

Q:  Is it possible to have Ensemble Elan accompany a personal friend who wishes to sing at my wedding?
A: Yes it is.  We do require adequate rehearsal time with the ensemble and the vocalist to assure you and your guests a quality performance.

Q:  I know the piece when I hear it, but I do not know the name. Can you help?
A: At your request, you may receive several audio demos accompanied by a repertoire list.  You will then be able to match the piece with the title.

Q:  How do I go about securing the services of Ensemble Elan for my event?
A: Ensemble Elan requires a non-refundable deposit to reserve your date.

Q:  How far in advance should I reserve Ensemble Elan for my date?
A: While three to six months is an accepted rule of thumb, Ensemble Elan can also accommodate later and even last minute requests.

Q:  What if my wedding or event does not start on time?

A: Ensemble Elan is there to create a calming atmosphere for you.  We are your safety net in the event of late arrivals or last minute details.  Ensemble Elan is there to make your event work for you.

Q:  Do you ever play a piece that is not currently in your repertoire?

A: Yes we do. Ensemble Elan has a wide range of repertoire but it is by no means inclusive. While we ask that you yield to our expertise as to what works best for a particular instrumentation, we are happy to accommodate special requests.

Q:  Is it possible to meet with Julie or to hear a live performance of Ensemble Elan?
A: Absolutely!  Not only is it possible; but, we highly recommend it. Please check the appearances page of this web site or call Julie so that you may begin visiting about your event and planning your music!
